The investigation into the Birmingham police shooting death of a 26-year-old Jamal Williams will be led by the Jefferson County Bessemer Cutoff District Attorney’s Office.

Police Chief Michael Pickett said District Attorney Lynneice Washington’s office will take over the probe after the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency announced it would no longer investigate the deadly shooting after the chief publicly released footage of the incident.

The release of the video is allowable under Alabama law but against ALEA’s policy.

“Maintaining the highest level of public trust, as a best practice in modern community policing, is grounded in independent oversight during critical incidents such as this,” Pickett said Monday in a prepared statement.
