Four CT Hospitals Among Nation's Maternity Care Leaders, New Rankings Show: See Which Ones

More than 100 hospitals across the Northeast and mid-Atlantic are being recognized for how they care for newborns and their mothers.

U.S. News & World Report released its 2026 list of Best Hospitals for Maternity Care on Tuesday, Dec. 9. The ratings analyzed detailed labor and delivery data from a record 901 hospitals.

Every summer, U.S. News collects metrics from hospitals to determine the best C-section rates, newborn complication rates, breastfeeding support, and maternal safety practices.

"Choosing where to welcome a new baby is one of the most personal health care decisions a family makes," said Jennifer Winston, a health data scientist at U.S. News. "Expectant parents can use U.S. News' Best Hospitals for Maternity Care to compare key outcomes and support services at maternity hospitals in their area."

Winston also said the best hospitals share several features.

"They are significantly more likely to be registered as 'baby-friendly,' which is a metric that identifies hospitals that are performing best practices for encouraging breastfeeding," she said. "They have significantly lower C-section rates. They have significantly lower severe, unexpected newborn complications rates among babies, as well as much lower rates of episiotomy and much higher rates of breast milk feeding."

The 2026 list also highlights hospitals serving regions at risk of becoming maternity care deserts. U.S. News recognized 147 Maternity Care Access Hospitals that continue to offer essential services in underserved areas.

Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC, are among the 20 metropolitan areas with the highest number of top maternity hospitals.
