A woman found asleep behind the wheel of a stolen car on I-91 led police on a high-speed chase through several Connecticut towns before she was arrested in Glastonbury, state police said.
The incident began Monday, Dec. 8, at 1:40 a.m. on I-91 South near the Exit 26 off-ramp in Wethersfield, where a trooper saw a red Honda Civic parked on the right shoulder and partially blocking the travel lane, Connecticut State Police said. The vehicle was running, and a woman, later identified as Seneca Quintton Ann Josey, 28, of Farmington was slumped over the wheel, police said.
The trooper deployed stop sticks as a precaution and approached the car. Josey appeared “dazed and confused,” police said. When told to place the vehicle in park and step out, she instead put the car in drive and fled, striking the stop sticks.
Police said the driver initiated a pursuit through Wethersfield, Route 3, and Glastonbury, failing to stop at traffic signals, crossing into oncoming lanes, and reaching speeds up to 75 mph. The pursuit was ended for safety reasons, and multiple agencies began searching the area. Glastonbury Police later found the vehicle, which fled again after striking a police cruiser, state police said.
At 3:07 a.m., Troop H received a report of a Honda parked on UConn Avenue in Glastonbury. Troopers found the same woman asleep in the back seat, police said. When they woke her, she tried to climb into the driver’s seat but was safely taken into custody.
Troopers saw numerous needles and multiple registration plates inside the vehicle, according to state police. A records check showed the Honda had been reported stolen out of Simsbury on Nov. 23.
Josey was taken to Troop H, processed on numerous charges, and held on a $250,000 bond, state police said. Josey was scheduled to appear at New Britain Superior Court on Dec. 9.
