A critical incident has been formally declared by the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. This measure was taken due to extreme pressure on emergency services and a high demand for available hospital beds.

Four hospitals under the Trust's umbrella are significantly impacted by the overwhelming demand across the city. These include Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Heartlands, and Good Hope, which have been noted as 'overcrowded'.

The main reason for the surge in demand is a substantial influx of flu patients requiring inpatient care. An exceptional number of 269 people across all sites were reportedly hospitalised with the debilitating infection.
