LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - (News release from Texas Tech Athletics)

Shiel Wood, the architect for Texas Tech’s rise as one of the nation’s top defenses, was named Tuesday one of five finalists for the prestigious Broyles Award, which celebrates the nation’s top assistant coach.

This is the first time in Wood’s career he’s been named a Broyles finalist as he was joined by three other fellow defensive coordinators in Bryant Haines (Indiana), Matt Patricia (Ohio State) and Corey Hetherman (Miami). Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo rounded out the list of finalists.

Wood has transformed the Texas Tech defense in less than a year after inheriting a unit that surrendered 34.8 points and 460.2 yards of total offense in 2024. Texas Tech currently ranks among the national defensive leaders,
