WEST ORANGE, Texas — The West Orange-Stark community is mourning the loss of a true Texas high school football legend with the passing of Dan Hooks Tuesday morning, the district confirmed.

Hooks coached at West Orange-Stark for 29 years, leading the Mustangs to 17 district titles and two State Championship victories in 1986 and 1987.

With a career record of 277-71-2 at West Orange-Stark, Hooks joined other Texas high school football royalty in the Southeast Texas Coaches Association Hall of Honor and the Greater Houston Football Coaches Association Hall of Honor.

Hooks had coached several players who later became staple names in the NFL including Kevin Smith, Chris Cole and of course Hall of Fame Hopeful Earl Thomas.
