LEWISTON, Maine — When Iman Osman was elected to represent Lewiston’s Ward 5 on the city council in November, he likely did not expect calls for his resignation and investigations into his history to occur one month later.

The 36-year-old councilor-elect was indicted on two weapons charges in December, one charge of stealing a weapon and one charge of receiving a stolen weapon, according to court documents. These charges follow scrutiny of Osman’s legal address and have prompted Lewiston’s mayor to urge Osman to resign.

“I do believe that these charges are going to be distracting to city business,” Lewiston Mayor Carl Sheline said. “I do think that is the right thing for him to step down from his city Councilor position.”
