TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - The city of Tucson will close its waitlist for public housing assistance by Jan. 1, which includes housing choice vouchers commonly known as Section 8 and public housing units.
More than 40,000 people are on the waitlist for affordable housing assistance in Tucson. As the need for low-income housing continues to outpace resources, city officials said they had no choice but to close applications.
Tucson’s Housing Choice Voucher program reopened applications in 2023 after being closed for more than five years. Since then, 40,000 people have been seeking subsidies that only a few hundred households receive each year.
“When waitlists open, there is a flood of requests,” said Jason Thorpe, the city of Tucson’s Community Housing and Development Director.
