PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A former Cesar Chavez High School head football coach can’t teach for two years after his certificate was suspended in November.
The Arizona State Board of Education approved an agreement that suspends William Chipley Jr.’s teaching certificate for two years. The suspension is linked to the drowning of 15-year-old student-athlete Chris Hampton , which happened during a team trip Chipley was supervising to Show Low Lake in July 2023.
The suspension includes two mandatory conditions that Chipley must finish before he can teach again. Chipley has to give two presentations about best practices for off-campus activities with large student groups, including supervision, safety protocols and communication with parents and school administration.
