PHOENIX (AZFamily) — An Arizona lawmaker thinks she can get votes to approve a pay raise for legislators in exchange for tougher term limits.
Democratic Rep. Stacey Travers from Phoenix has filed a new bill that would raise the salary for state lawmakers from $24,000 to $35,000 a year. She’s offering something in return: stricter term limits, the kind lawmakers can’t work around.
State lawmakers haven’t seen a pay raise since 1998. Voters approved term limits in 1992.
The measure, HCR 2002 , would amend the state constitution so someone can only serve four terms in the House and four terms in the Senate, a maximum of 16 years at the state Capitol.
