Mayor Mike Duggan is running for governor as an independent, but nobody seriously believes he’s anything other than a Democrat in different clothing. The switch in labels is all political math.
Duggan may have thought it would be hard to win the nomination against Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson. A primary featuring a progressive Black millennial and a gentry White woman in today’s identity-driven Democratic Party left him without a lane.
