President Donald Trump, commenting on the renewed border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia on Monday, said, “It pains me to say this, but Cambodia and Thailand started today. Tomorrow I have to make a phone call, and I’m going to stop a war between two very powerful countries with just one phone call. We are creating peace through strength."
The fresh clashes have left several soldiers dead on both sides and triggered the displacement of tens of thousands, despite a US-brokered ceasefire.
The US State Department on Monday urged Thailand and Cambodia to halt renewed fighting along their shared border, warning that the escalating hostilities threaten to unravel a ceasefire agreement brokered earlier this year with the backing of former President Donald Trump.
