JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KFVS) - Missouri’s new congressional map will not go into effect this week as planned because of a petition drive.

People Not Politicians, the group behind a petition drive, said it turned in more than enough signatures to trigger a statewide vote. Now, workers in the Secretary of State’s Office and county election authorities have to go through nearly 700 boxes containing more than 300,000 signatures to verify if they belong to a registered Missouri voter.

The map was set to go into effect Thursday, but by turning in petition signatures, People Not Politicians effectively paused it. If the signatures are found insufficient, the map will go into effect. If the signatures meet the threshold for a ballot referendum, the map will not go into effect unless Missourians
