A report prepared by the city's Reparations Task Force, which includes a recommendation for cash payments to Black Detroiters who are descendants of enslaved people, will be formally presented to the Detroit City Council in January, the Detroit News reports.
The report includes dozens of recommendations addressing issues such as housing, utility shutoffs, education, and police reform. The report was previously submitted to the council earlier in the fall.
Some have expressed skepticism about the report.
The Detroit News reports:
Keith Williams, a member of the task force who also ran the campaign that put the proposal on the 2021 ballot, put it bluntly: "It's too long."
"My whole thought when we started was to create an economic engine for the future,"
