Michigan Court of Claims Judge Sima Patel ruled against the Michigan Cannabis Industry Association on Monday, paving the way for a new 24 percent wholesale tax on cannabis, effective Jan. 1, Crain's Detroit Business reports.

The judge denied the association's request for an injunction to halt the new tax.

In 2018, Michigan voters approved a ballot measure to legalize recreational pot and impose a 10 percent excise tax. State lawmakers in October passed legislation imposing the 24 percent wholesale tax to help pay for road maintenance.
