A fire broke out at Zigwagwa Market in Mzuzu yesterday, destroying seven shops and leaving several traders devastated.
Moffat Nyirenda, Chairperson for the Matabwa Section at the market, said the fire started in the early hours of the morning. He said the cause of the blaze remains unknown and that authorities are still assessing the total value of the property lost.
One of the affected traders, Kenneth Goliati, said he has been left with nothing after his shop was completely razed down. “This was my only source of income. I don’t know how I will recover from this,” he said.
The shops destroyed included restaurants, hardware outlets, and barbershops. By the time firefighters arrived, the flames had already caused extensive damage.
