A brutal form of torture has appalled historians for centuries - and is one of the most terrifying forms of execution ever conceived.
Scaphism involved ensnaring a victim between two wooden boats, force-feeding them milk and honey, slathering their bodies with more of the sticky concoction, and leaving hordes of insects to devour them.
The gruesome practice is detailed in chilling depth by Greek historian Plutarch, who wrote about a Persian soldier named Mithridates.
