Michigan's personal protection order (PPO) service process stands out nationally for imposing costs or danger to victims of domestic violence and their loved ones, something legislation recently passed by the Michigan Senate aims to change.

Senate Bills 611 and 612 , which passed the Michigan Senate with wide, bipartisan support Dec. 9 would require law enforcement to serve a PPO as soon as possible and ban a court or law enforcement agency from collecting a fee from a petitioner for serving the court order to address domestic violence and stalking so long as state dollars in a proposed PPO service fund remain available. The current state budget sets aside $1 million to reimburse law enforcement agencies for the costs of serving PPOs.
