Only days after the Gateshead Flyover closed last year, it became clear that senior council figures had similar worries about the Redheugh’s condition.

The bridge, the westernmost of the seven main Tyne crossings between Newcastle and Gateshead, is undergoing detailed checks to determine what repairs are needed to tackle cracks and crumbling concrete.
