Lori Jacobs saw the closure of Cake in a Cup in Sylvania Township coming a year ago, the co-owner of the local cupcake shop said.
Her pastry shop at 6511 Central Ave. started seeing a drop in sales when Nothing Bundt Cakes and Crumbl Cookies moved nearby, she said.
Those competing shops as well as a decline in business after the coronavirus pandemic, rising ingredient costs, and a change in trends has led the co-owner to close the brick-and-mortar location after 20 years of success — and notoriety from winning on the show Cupcake Wars in 2011.
“It’s sad,” Ms. Jacobs said of the closure. “I think I’ve come to a place where it’s almost like I’m feeling relieved because I’ve been carrying this for so long.”
The closure was a “perfect storm” for Cake in a Cup, Ms. Jacobs said.
