CHICO — Knee-deep in Big Chico Creek, I waved to Dave Nopel as he stood on the embankment taking photos midmorning Dec. 2.
The purpose of getting in the creek barefoot in December, you might ask, was to recreate a protest from the year 1941, when a Chico State student entered the creek to demand the rebuilding of a campus bridge that had been torn down.
You see, today’s Chico State students have it easy. There are currently eight bridges on campus between Warner Street and The Esplanade, giving ample access to classes on either side. In 1941, there were just two bridges, one of which was dubbed the Little Green Bridge, according to articles from The Record.
