A parade of Alberta clipper systems is sweeping across the Midwest and Northeast, setting the stage for a potentially disruptive winter storm this weekend.
The fast-moving weather disturbances are expected to deliver a mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain and gusty winds, with the chance for the first accumulating snow of the season from Philadelphia to New York City and Boston.
The first in the series of clippers tracked from Michigan to the St. Lawrence Valley on Wednesday, Dec. 10, spreading 3-6 inches of snow from North Dakota through upstate New York and Vermont, according to AccuWeather.
Gusty winds accompanied the lead system, with widespread gusts of 40-50 mph stretching from the Ohio Valley into the Northeast. Some locations, especially mountain gaps and urban canyons, could experience even higher gusts.
The next clipper system is expected Friday afternoon, Dec. 12 into Friday evening. This one is expected to target Maryland and Virginia, but light snow and squalls are also possible in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, and New England.
The weekend brings the main event as the winter storm rides the Arctic air into the Northeast.
AccuWeather forecasts this system to potentially reach the Atlantic coast Saturday night, Dec. 13, and continue into Sunday, Dec. 14.
Forecasters say the timing and intensity of the cold air will determine whether major cities along the I-95 corridor see their first measurable snow.
"Because the coldest air may be delayed a bit near the Atlantic coast, it is not quite a sure bet for all snow along the I-95 corridor of the Northeast this weekend," AccuWeather Senior Storm Warning Meteorologist Eddie Walker said.
Still, forecasters stress the potential for a wintry mix or accumulating snow is high, and travel impacts are likely.
Businesses and travelers are urged to prepare for delays and disruptions as multiple waves of Arctic air interact with the storm track, AccuWeather says. Conditions may change rapidly as each clipper moves through, making for hazardous travel and possible business interruptions.
