COLUMBUS, Ohio — Capital punishment is a sensitive topic for Lamont Hunter Sr.
"I was wrongfully convicted and sentenced to death back in 2007," he told 10 Investigates.
The Case That Led to Death Row
He spent 16 years on death row after being convicted of killing his girlfriend's 3-year-old son.
Hunter told 10 Investigates that the boy fell down the basement stairs.
According to court reporting, at the time of his first trial, a coroner testified that the toddler actually had been shaken to death.
New Evidence, New Outcome
But in May 2023, after she was given new evidence, the coroner changed her mind.
And Hunter was granted a new trial.
"I eventually did what I did, accepted the plea agreement and came home to my family and regained my freedom," he said.
