Former Tampa Bay Rays star shortstop Wander Franco will receive a new trial after an appeals court in the Dominican Republic on Tuesday voided his conviction earlier this year of sexually abusing a minor.
Franco, 24, and his attorneys had sought to have his two-year prison sentence suspended, while prosecutors pushed to increase his sentence to five years. On Tuesday, however, the appeals court ruled in Franco’s favor and ordered a new panel of judges to oversee his new trial. There is no set timeframe for when the trial will begin.
Franco’s attorneys applauded the ruling.
“We are winning, because we have argued, and continue to reaffirm, that there is no direct evidence against Wander Franco that links him to the act for which he could be criminally or civilly sanctioned or convicted,”
