CHARLESTON, W.Va. — State Board of Education member Chris Stansbury became emotional at Wednesday’s BOE meeting when talking about the recent suicide death of a Kanawha County high school student.

Stansbury said 15-year-old Bryce Tate, a student at Nitro High School, was a victim of sextortion. He talked about some of the previously shared facts of the case.

“They were using those pictures (of Tate) to extort money from him. The young man didn’t think he had any options and he took his life,” Stansbury said choking back tears.

He asked Department of Education Safety Investigator James Agee what can be done to prevent a similar tragedy.

“What can we do to help educate our kids about sextortion? What can we do to help with future issues like this?”
