Some travellers to the U.S . may soon need to submit their social media history from the past five years to enter the country, according to a new proposal from U.S. President Donald Trump ‘s administration.
The notice from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), published on the Federal Register Tuesday , could make submitting that information — as well as other “high value data” like their DNA and the personal information of family members — “mandatory” for certain travellers from countries that are part of a visa waiver program.
The proposed requirements would affect travellers using the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), an electronic application to enter the U.S. for citizens of the 42 countries under the U.S. Visa Waiver Program . These include Australia,
