CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - The man accused of fatally stabbing a Ukrainian refugee on a Charlotte light rail back in August is due in federal court on Thursday.

Decarlos Brown Jr. , who was indicted by a grand jury in October for violence against a railroad carrier and mass transportation system resulting in death, will make his first appearance in federal court on Thursday, Dec. 11.

Brown is accused of stabbing 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska on a Charlotte light rail at the end of August.

The stabbing gained national attention from President Donald Trump and other officials as they blamed Charlotte leaders for what happened. The stabbing also led to changes in North Carolina’s criminal justice system, including the passing of Iryna’s Law .
