MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - A warrant has been issued for a convicted rapist’s arrest after the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office says an omission in his paperwork allowed him to be freed from jail by mistake.
Cameron Brooks, 23, pleaded guilty to a 2022 aggravated rape charge on Tuesday. During the same court appearance, a judge dismissed a separate aggravated rape charge.
SCSO reports that there was no legal hold for the charge he pleaded guilty to. This is the responsibility of Shelby County Information Technologies, a government agency that is separate from the sheriff’s office.
“Because of this error, Brooks was released from custody,” a department spokesperson said in a statement.
Since there was no hold to keep him behind bars, Brooks walked out of 201 Poplar on Wednesday morning. Shelb
