In January 2024, I flew to Los Angeles to speak with Matthew Stafford about a reckoning.

The Detroit Lions were about to host their former quarterback in a playoff game – his first game in Detroit since a trade in 2021 that changed the trajectory of both the Lions and the L.A. Rams .

So I found my way to the glorified high school locker room the Rams used at the time – on Cal Lutheran’s campus in Thousand Oaks, California – where Stafford was sitting at his locker, scrolling through his phone. That’s a green light for reporters.
