PORTLAND, Maine (WMTW) - A Maine man who was charged with killing his roommate in Westbrook last year is set to serve more than two decades in prison after he reached a plea deal with prosecutors.

James Fowler was initially charged with murder in the November 2024 death of Robert Seger, but Fowler agreed to plead guilty to manslaughter in connection with Seger’s death.

Fowler, 48, also pleaded guilty to an animal cruelty charge as part of the deal.

Court documents obtained by Maine’s Total Coverage indicate Fowler was sentenced Tuesday to 30 years in prison on the manslaughter charge with all but 22 years suspended. Fowler was sentenced to serve 6 months for the animal cruelty charge, and that sentence runs concurrent with his manslaughter sentence.
