CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — An inmate who was inside the Charleston County Jail at the time of a 23-year-old woman’s death is detailing the graphic details and alleged neglect she says she witnessed.
Mary Brucato died Aug. 11 inside the Al Cannon Detention Center and it was not until Thursday that the Charleston County Coroner’s Office ruled her death a homicide .
Charleston Chief Deputy Coroner Brittney Martin stated that after a thorough investigation, the cause of death was determined to be complications of fentanyl intoxication, recent cocaine use and medical neglect.
Former Charleston County inmate Amber Dweck stated it was the night of Aug. 10 when she and other inmates inside the jail heard Brucato calling for help for hours from behind the closed doors of her jail cell.
