CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — False information posted to social media about Immigration and Customs Enforcement is causing fear in families across immigrant communities, community advocates say.

“We are hearing an increase fear in the community,” ACLU of South Carolina Immigrant Rights Advocacy Strategist Dulce Lopez said.

Enrique Grace, president of the Charleston Hispanic Association, said many posts and videos circulating online contain inaccurate information about ICE raids or operations.

Families have stopped taking their children to school, skipped church services, and in some cases avoided hospitals. Lopez described one tragic case where a parent did not take their child to the hospital due to fear that immigration officers might be there. The child died at home.
