PITT COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- Pitt County Public Health Department is investigating a case of Tuberculosis (TB) at a middle school.

TB is a serious bacterial infection primarily affecting the lungs but can also impact other parts of the body. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Symptoms include a cough lasting over three weeks, chest pain, coughing up blood, weakness or fatigue, weight loss, loss of appetite, chills, fever and night sweats.

The county's Health Director, Wes Gray, confirmed the case was reported at Farmville Middle School on Grimmersburg Street in Farmville. He assured us there is no immediate risk to public health and that a letter was sent to all parents and guardians.
