AUGUSTA, Maine — State lawmakers are looking into how tariffs on Canadian goods are affecting industries in Maine.

This comes after President Donald Trump said he imposed tariffs to promote American industries.

The Maine-Canadian Legislative Advisory Commission held a public hearing Wednesday to outline the tariffs' effect on Maine businesses.

The state exported more than $1.3 billion in manufactured items to Canada last year, according to the Maine International Trade Center. But that number, excluding petroleum, is down 18 percent in 2025.

Some expressed their concerns at the hearing about the tariffs' long term impacts to the logging industry.
