A sperm donor who had a genetic mutation that was linked to an increased risk to developing cancer fathered at least 197 children across Europe.
Some of the children have already died from the disease, according to an investigation by the BBC and members of the European Broadcasting Union’s Investigative Journalism Network. The investigation included freedom of information requests and interviews with doctors and patients.
The probe revealed that the donor, who himself was healthy, had a rare gene mutation named TP53, which is likely to cause Li-Fraumeni syndrome, a rare disorder that could increase the risk of developing cancer.
At the time of making the sperm donations, the man wasn’t aware that he was affected by the mutation.
