Schools were put into lockdown as four people were arrested for allegedly brandishing a crossbow.
Police received reports at 9.21am of a group in the Norley Hall Avenue area of Wigan handling a crossbow and shouting at passing cars. The four suspects were detained less than an hour later at a nearby address by the Specialist Operations Unit, with a crossbow also recovered. They were taken to custody, where they remain for further questioning. Three men in their 20s and a 22-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon, Greater Manchester Police said.
As a precaution, several schools in the local area briefly went into lockdown. There was no direct threat to any pupil or school, the schools have now been re-opened.
Neighbourhood Inspector Sam Davies said: "This was an isolated incident that poses no ongoing risk to the community. We understand this caused concern, officers will remain visible in the area and visit affected schools today to provide reassurance. Anyone with further information or concerns is encouraged to speak to our officers or contact us directly."
Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 101 or their Live Chat. Individuals can also contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
