HAMISH Morrison’s recent report on Keir Starmer admitting that he “never worried about the future” under successive Tory governments (thenational.scot, Dec 8) is one of those moments that should stop people in their tracks – because it says far more about the governing mindset now in charge than any prepared speech ever could.

If 12 years of austerity, welfare punishment, collapsing public services, and the hollowing-out of local government did not register as something to “worry” about, then we are given a clear insight into what is considered normal damage at the top of British politics. Whole communities could be impoverished, councils bankrupted, NHS waiting lists stretched into years, and social care left to rot – and still the future was apparently not in question.

But now it is.
