A £68 MILLION flood prevention scheme in Dumfries is set to go ahead after decades of debate.

The Whitesands in the town is regularly flooded, leaving businesses and locals repeatedly having to clear up the damage caused, and occasionally needing to be rescued.

But Dumfries and Galloway Council, which is now under SNP control after the Tory administration fell apart, voted 23 to 18 to allow proposals to go ahead that will provide a raised and landscaped walkway.

The plans will be 80% funded by the Scottish Government . The local authority has already allocated £5m to the plans, but will commit a further £8.7m to ensure Holyrood support.

The work will begin early next year, it is understood.
