GRANT COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA) - The Grant County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a 22-year-old man who they say scammed an elderly man out of hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The investigation was initiated in June 2025, after a 68-year-old Sweester man reported that he had been scammed out of more than $231,000.
According to the department, the scammers contacted the man pretending to be law enforcement officials. They say the scammers told the man his identity had been stolen and criminal charges were filed under his name.
Police say these scammers convinced the victim to convert his savings into gold bars and cryptocurrency to protect his assets during the supposed investigation.
