A 21-year-old Connecticut man who told his passengers he was "a little f--ked up" before a fiery crash that killed a 16-year-old boy has been arrested, authorities said.
Sergei Michael Moscardelli, 21, was charged with second-degree manslaughter, second-degree assault with a motor vehicle, operating under the influence, traveling unreasonably fast, and failure to drive in the proper lane in connection with the November 2024 crash in Ellington, Connecticut State Police said.
The crash happened near Crystal Lake just before 8 p.m. Moscardelli was going more than 55 miles per hour in a 35 mph zone, lost control of his Kia Sorento, and smashed into a tree, police said. The SUV burst into flames.
James Moran, a 16-year-old from Stafford, died in the fire, police said.
Shortly before the crash, another passenger said Moscardelli showed him a bottle of vodka in the backseat and said, "I'm not going to lie to you, I'm a little fked up right now."
That passenger said Moscardelli was speeding and driving erratically, and that he asked to get out of the car shortly before the crash, according to a police report.
Moscardelli's blood alcohol content was 0.08%, police said.
Moscardelli was released after posting a $50,000 bond, police said.
A GoFundMe for James Moran said he was a “smart kid with a bright future.”
He was a funny, kind, caring young man and often expressed how he wanted everyone to be happy. He loved spending time with his dad, Michael. They would go fishing, hiking, exploring, and discover new places together. His dad shared his love for cooking with James, and he enjoyed experimenting with spices and variations on a recipe. His father says he was so proud of the man he was becoming and that he will be forever broken by James' passing.
