WASHINGTON (WCSC) — U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace introduced legislation Wednesday to rename the Black Lives Matter Plaza in Washington, D.C., in honor of Charlie Kirk.
Kirk, a right-wing political commentator, was shot and killed three months ago during a rally at a Utah university campus.
The “Charlie Kirk Freedom of Speech Plaza” Act would officially rename the plaza that was designated in 2020 following the death of George Floyd.
Mace, a Republican who represents South Carolina’s First Congressional District and is running for governor, said Kirk had called for the removal of the plaza before his death to end what he called “mass race hysteria.”
