CLARKSVILLE, Indiana — The Clarksville Police Department is recognizing one of its officers for his vigilance and quick life-saving actions.
Chief Nathan Walls said Officer Matthew Purlee was patrolling the area of Eastern Boulevard just before 5 a.m. on Dec. 7 when he noticed heavy smoke in the sky.
Purlee searched the area and discovered the smoke was coming from a burning home on Evergreen Drive.
Flames were already coming out of the home's chimney when the officer showed up, so he jumped into action.
According to police, Purlee was able to quickly locate everyone inside the home and help them evacuate. The residents told police they didn't know the home was on fire until Purlee knocked on their door.
Two other officers, Officers Layman and Archer, arrived on scene to provide assis
