PORTLAND, Maine — Charter Communications has announced that it is eliminating 176 positions at its Portland call center as part of a transition to other U.S.-based customer service centers, a company spokesperson said.

Former customer ser v ice representative Gage Randall said the closure of the call center came abruptly without any reasoning given.

“It’s been very devastating for a lot of people, myself included,” Randall said.

Randall said he was just clocking in for work Wednesday when he and the rest of the staff were given the news.

“Essentially, ‘You guys are being laid off, this is what's happening. The center is closed effective today,’” he recalled.
