The Trump administration is suing Minneapolis Public Schools over a policy that provides layoff protections to teachers of color and who are members of "underrepresented populations."
Filed in the U.S. District Court of Minnesota on Tuesday, the lawsuit alleges a 2022 policy exempting teachers of color from layoffs violates Title VII, which prohibits employment discrimination and harassment based on race, religion, sex, and national origin.
It also asks the court for a permanent injunction against the district to stop it from implementing any similar provisions in any future contract agreements between the district and the teacher’s union.
