A terrified woman hid in her wardrobe when she heard a burglar's footsteps approaching her bedroom.

As she called 999 to report the intruder, her 13-year-old cat leaped off the bed and confronted Callum Quirk in the hallway.

The feline, called Nexi, gave Quirk a fright and he fled empty-handed from the property.

The 'career criminal' had snuck into the house in McClellan Place, Widnes, through a downstairs window on September 9.

By the time police arrived, Quirk had fled, but CCTV had captured him at the victim’s front door, preparing to carry out the burglary, and climbing through an open downstairs window.
