(WKYT) — Today’s Good Question is: Are there any laws or penalties regarding false advertising, specifically on food? Sandwiches and other items appear much larger and juicier on TV than what you actually receive.
Both the FDA and FTC oversee regulations concerning truthfulness in advertising when it comes to food.
Companies must be truthful about content and nutrition
In general, companies have to be truthful when it comes to the content of food, or the nutritional information. For claims like fat-free, they have to meet a certain threshold.
If you say the burger is a quarter pounder, there needs to be one fourth of a pound of meat. If you show peas and potatoes on a soup label, they better be in the soup. Calorie information should be correct.
