New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency Thursday due to dwindling propane supplies as snow squalls and chilly temperatures are forecast for the weekend.

The emergency is due to a service disruption at a major propane distribution plant in Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania. It takes effect at 9 a.m. Friday.

In a statement, Murphy said the order is intended to make sure families that rely on propane for heating and cooking have adequate supplies.

“As temperatures continue to drop, ensuring that every person has access to a safe, warm environment is essential,” the governor added. “I am declaring a State of Emergency to ensure that the approximately 186,000 New Jerseyans who rely on propane for home heating purposes can receive it without interruption.”
