Maureen Kamischke knew something was wrong when she brought her 10-month-old adoptive daughter Maren home from China in 1998. “She was not where she should have been,” Kamischke tells PEOPLE.
She and her husband Kent, who live in the Washington, D.C., area, had adopted another daughter two years earlier, and could see right away that Maren's development was different.
“She was what you call a floppy baby,” Kamischke says of Maren's fatigue and weakness.
