A Bridgeton father described by loved ones as a die-hard Eagles fan and the neighborhood “security guard” was shot and killed last month, and three men are now facing charges in connection with the case, authorities announced.
Bridgeton police were dispatched to 39 Nichols St. on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at approximately 8:51 p.m. for a gunshot victim identified as Jamille Wright, 42 of Bridgeton, Cumberland County Prosecutor Jennifer Webb-McRae and Bridgeton Police Chief James Battavio said.
Wright was transported for medical treatment, but while paramedics were rendering aid, Wright died, according to investigators.
Prosecutors said Charles B. Clark, 39 of Millville, was charged with murder (purposeful), murder (knowingly), unlawful possession of a handgun, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, certain persons not to have weapons, and hindering apprehension. Clark was taken into custody on Dec. 10, and the State will move for pretrial detention, officials said.
Investigators said Markese K. Childers, 42, Bridgeton, was charged with hindering apprehension. The State alleges that Childers transported Clark away from the scene to avoid his discovery or arrest. Childers was arrested on Nov. 23, and a State motion for his pretrial detention was denied by Superior Court Judge Russell DePersia.
Prosecutors said Michael A. Thomas, 39 of Bridgeton, was charged with obstruction and hindering apprehension. The State alleges that Thomas provided a false statement by denying he knew Clark when he had provided transportation to Clark before the shooting and allowed him to operate his vehicle, and by denying he witnessed the murder when he was present and clearly knew Clark. Thomas was arrested on Nov. 26, and a State motion for pretrial detention was denied by judge DePersia.
Wright was remembered in his obituary as a devoted father of three, a passionate football fan and grill master, and a protective presence in his community, according to his obituary.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information may contact CCPO.TIPS from any smartphone, tablet, or computer. Information may be provided anonymously.
