The Rep. Ernest A. Johnson Memorial Bridge, a bridge on Interstate 290 that sits over Lake Quinsigamond between Worcester and Shrewsbury, will be renovated next year.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is responsible for the $31 million project.
Construction is expected to begin in 2026, according to John Goggin, a communications analyst for MassDOT.
During the project, lane closures are required, according to Goggin. An exact schedule featuring the closures will be determined after a contract is awarded. The contract is expected to happen sometime during the first half of 2026, according to Goggin.
Residents will be notified of traffic impacts ahead of time.
The project will consist of removing the bridge’s existing coating and painting the structural steel. A
